Position summary:

This position is responsible for translating calls to and from individuals who are deaf, hard of hearing or have difficulty speaking.  All calls must be translated accurately and all call content must be held in strict confidence.

Essential functions:

• Translate effectively between American Sign Language and English for relay calls through type text on a computer.
• Translate relay calls accurately, quickly and without deliberate alteration of the messages.
• Utilize the “team” approach with relay operators to provide relay users with accurate, timely and effective communication.
• Works a variety of shifts.
•  Adheres to proper Relay procedures and strict confidentiality rules and standards.
• Acts in a professional manner at all times when dealing with relay users.
• Understands directions and information given by the relay user.
• Uses “down time” to review procedures and languages, and to construct tools to help understand and reference procedures and languages.
• Offers solutions and options when presenting problems or concerns to supervisors.
• Stresses quality in all work situations.

Other responsibilities: 

• Arrives on time to all scheduled shifts.
• Works well without constant supervision.
• Regular attendance that is punctual and dependable is required.
• Volunteers for extra hours when needed.
• Actively participates in training events including Relay Operator meetings, Culture Trainings and seminars offered by the company.
• Performs other work-related duties as assigned.

Preferred education, experience, and skills:

• Must be 18 years of age or older.
• Associate’s Degree in Deaf Education Studies from a college or university; or three to five years related sign language interpreter experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Ability to read and interpret documents such as procedure manuals, safety rules, and operating and maintenance instructions.
• Proficient in the understanding and use of American Sign Language (ASL).
• Possess a comprehensive understanding of Deaf Culture.
• Ability to translate between American Sign Language and English.
• Excellent written and oral/manual communication skills.
• Ability to pass a written certification test administered by the company.
